Are You Guilty of Taking God’s Name in Vain?
A recent experience highlighted how people misuse God’s name today. Are you obeying the Third Commandment and honoring His name as you should?

Recently my wife and I were in a supermarket shopping for groceries when we encountered a group of school-aged youths. They were relatively well-behaved, but there was a disturbing aspect of their conversation.
As they were walking through the store, their language was frequently interspersed with the use of God’s name in a profane and blasphemous manner.
Maybe they were unaware of the Third Commandment. Perhaps their parents had neglected to teach them the importance of this commandment.
Today the misuse of God’s name is widespread. God’s name is often used carelessly and treated lightly across nearly every area of society—on television, in movies, by world leaders, in casual conversation and beyond.
The Third Commandment expounded
The Third Commandment concerns the sanctity of God’s name and is one of the most important ways we honor and respect His holiness.
The Third Commandment reads, “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain” (Exodus 20:7).
Notice the words will not hold him guiltless. Unlike what many today think, this is not a matter God takes lightly.
Likewise, Christians should not take this lightly. We must be careful not to use God’s name in a careless or vain manner. If we disregard His command, we are not “guiltless.”
Showing respect for God’s name
The word vain means useless, false or worthless. Taking God’s name in vain means using it in a trivial or insignificant manner—treating it as common.
Using God’s name in this way is less about the specific words themselves and more about our lack of reverence and respect for God that those words reveal.
We should be careful about carelessly using God’s name in exclamations of delight, gratification, surprise or displeasure.
We should be careful about carelessly using God’s name in exclamations of delight, gratification, surprise or displeasure. Those exclamations are often driven by emotion, not deep thought.
God’s name should never be used in a thoughtless and meaningless exclamation.
Without realizing it, many people often take His name in vain through euphemisms—substituting words or sounds that are similar to His name, but differ slightly. Words like “gosh,” “gee,” “golly,” “jeez” and even “oh my . . .” are examples of inappropriate euphemisms for God’s name.
Those who fear and respect God will strive to use His name only in a careful and respectful manner. On the other hand, those who don’t respect His power, holiness and greatness will treat His name in a flippant and irreverent manner, as if it were just any other word.
Points to consider in obeying the Third Commandment
As with all of God’s commandments, the Third Commandment actually goes much deeper than the letter of the law—than just misusing God’s name verbally. Let’s consider some other ways we can apply this commandment to our lives.
1. Take God’s Word seriously.
Notice God’s words recorded in Malachi 2:2: “‘If you will not hear, and if you will not take it to heart, to give glory to My name,’ says the LORD of Hosts, ‘I will send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have cursed them already, because you do not take it to heart.’”
God is warning that to hear or read God’s Word, but to not take it seriously and reject it, is neglecting to give glory to God’s name.
So, a major way we obey this commandment is to take a serious and sober approach to God’s Word. When we read the Bible, we show honor and respect to God’s name by applying what we read.
As James put it, we must “be doers of the word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22).
2. Hallow God’s name in our prayers (Matthew 6:9).
In His model prayer, Jesus instructed us to remember to hallow God’s name when we pray to Him (Matthew 6:9).
To hallow means to show deep honor and respect.
When we read the Bible, we show honor and respect to God’s name by applying what we read.
Obeying the Third Commandment isn’t just avoiding the misuse of His name, but also actively showing awe and deep reverence for His name.
There are many sections of Scripture that teach us how to show reverence for God in this manner.
The Psalms provide hundreds of examples of how to praise God’s name in our prayers. One excellent example is Psalm 8. (Consider reading through and meditating on how David treats God’s name in this psalm.)

3. Honor God by our behavior
In Deuteronomy 4:1-9, the Israelites were commanded to be an example to the other nations because their positive example would bring honor to the God who freed them and led them out of Egypt.
Just as well-behaved children bring respect and honor to their parents, Israel was to bring respect and honor to God by how they lived and operated as a nation. Sadly, their history was filled with doing the opposite—which profaned God’s name (Leviticus 20:3).
Christians are also to reflect God’s character in their daily lives and actions.
In Matthew 22:37-38, Christ stressed the proper attitude we should have in our relationship with our Father: “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment.”
One vital way we show God that we love Him is by honoring and upholding His name through our conduct and behavior.
Christ warned that “not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). Proclaiming God’s name, yet willfully disobeying His instructions for our lives, is a form of taking His name in vain.
We honor God’s name by faithfully endeavoring to do His will.
It is exciting to realize that God’s name will be linked to our name if we overcome and show genuine respect and honor to His name (Revelation 3:12).
How are you using God’s name?
Are you honoring God’s name in your thoughts, words and actions? How we treat His name ultimately reveals how we truly view Him.
In a world where God’s name is so often used carelessly, Christians are called to be different.
Rather than using God’s name casually or thoughtlessly, honor Him by speaking His name with reverence, choosing your words carefully and living in a way that brings honor to His name.
