“For You have formed my inward parts; You have covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well” (Psalm 139:13-14).
David’s powerful poetry in the book of Psalms extols the wonders of human reproduction and extols God who planned and designed the way for a husband and wife to become one flesh so that two cells might unite to become a new life!
The tiny egg, smaller than the period at the end of the sentence on this page, dwarfs the even tinier sperm; but together they contain all the genetic information necessary to produce a unique human being, more complex than any supercomputer ever designed! Could the blueprint required to design a star system be more amazing than this?
But God also designed the way to live; and by His ideal, we are
- Formed in love.
- Nurtured in love.
- Launched in love.
- Married in love, to renew the cycle and form more new lives in love.
By human ideals, though, the love God intended is often tarnished, invisible or absent during some of those formative stages; and people suffer for it.
God’s law—especially the Seventh Commandment against adultery—is designed to protect the ideal cycle of human life. Sin harms everyone—spiritually, emotionally and sometimes even physically—and whether it is sin of commission or omission, we can never get away from God holding us responsible and accountable.
Husbands and wives are to cherish, love and be faithful to one another, because of the great blessings that brings to us, our families and the strength of our society. But it’s even for more than that. Do you realize that marriage and family serves as part of our training for the next great miraculous stage in God’s plan?
You see, God has not finished His creative work in us. For each of us, God’s plan is to begin the process of reproduction again, but in an entirely different dimension. He offers a way for the seed of the His Spirit to unite with our minds, leading to our spiritual rebirth as children of God!
Someday, just as we marvel today at the miracle of physical reproduction, we will marvel at the miracle of spiritual reproduction. As the apostle John described it:
“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! … Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is” (1 John 3:1-2).
Between now and then, though, it is to everyone’s advantage—your mate’s, your family’s, your society’s—to follow our Creator’s design for love, marriage and sexuality.
As John also said, “Everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure” (1 John 3:3). Read more on this website about that!
