A Powerful Attention Getter

Acts 2:2-3

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.

Wind is used as a symbol of God’s Holy Spirit several times in the Bible (Ezekiel 37:9-14; John 3:8; 20:22). This powerful attention getter also reminds us of the strong wind that preceded God’s appearance to Elijah (1 Kings 19:11-12).

God used the sounds and lights and the miracle of languages mentioned in Acts 2:5-12 to draw large crowds for the Pentecost sermon that Peter was about to preach.
