This past January, we were excited to publish our 22nd booklet. Titled The Spirit World: Facts and Fallacies, this booklet explores a topic that has fascinated and mystified people for thousands of years: angels and demons.
Angels and demons have been the subject of literature, movies, speculation and adoration. But, as the booklet’s title suggests, many fallacies and falsehoods have arisen about these beings. This booklet cuts through the myths—from the belief that they are pure fiction to the idea that they should be sought for guidance—and explores exactly what the Bible reveals (and does not reveal) about them.
We interviewed the booklet’s author, Paul Luecke, to learn more about his work on this publication.
Q: What interests you about this topic, and why did you choose to write about it?
A: The physical world that God created is amazing enough. But to realize there’s another world of life God created that our eyes can’t see is very intriguing. At the same time, there are so many misunderstandings about the spirit realm and distortions of what’s in the Bible, that laying out the truth seemed needful.
Q: Can you give us a brief overview of the booklet’s structure and the general topics it covers?
A: The booklet starts with a discussion of the two most important spirit beings—God the Father and Jesus Christ—who created all life, including all spirit life. From there, the booklet shows that the spirit realm God created is the angelic realm, and it looks at common attributes of that realm. Next, it focuses on the specific types of angels God made (cherubim, seraphim, etc.)
It’s surprising how far removed popular images of angels are from the clear revelation of Scripture.
What comes next, historically, is that many of these angels turned against God; so the booklet then looks at an overview of Satan and the demons. These beings pose a very dangerous threat to humans, so the booklet examines how to guard against falling prey to their influence.
The picture turns bright as the booklet focuses on the incredible truth that God made humans with the potential to become spirit beings—in fact, much higher beings than the angels.
Then, finally, the booklet looks at what the future holds for Satan and the demons and for the righteous angels.
Q: Were there any particularly interesting new facts you learned in your research on this topic?
A: I believe we all have held assumptions about some aspects of the spirit realm. When we first look closer at related scriptures, one eye-opener is how much variety God created in the spirit world, including angels with the forms of animals that He would later create physically on earth, such as lions, eagles, cattle and horses.
It is also interesting to realize how much power God actually endowed some of these angels with. It’s surprising how far removed popular images of angels are from the clear revelation of Scripture.
Q: Why do you feel this booklet is important for people to read today?
A: More than ever before, people today are caught up almost exclusively in physical pursuits. They give little thought to the spirit world, especially as to how it relates to our human lives. What most people do think about the spirit world is colored by religious misinformation disseminated through the ages.
Also, without knowing the truth about end-time prophecies and the spirit world, many are unaware of the serious threat Satan and demons pose, and how their activity will increase in the future.
It’s important for everyone to know about this and about the service God is willing to provide those who are obedient and faithful to Him, which sometimes involves dispatching the holy angels to protect and serve us in various ways.
