Woe to You Who Desire the Day of the Lord

Amos 5:18

Woe to you who desire the day of the LORD! For what good is the day of the LORD to you? It will be darkness, and not light.

God wants us to look forward to the end result of the Day of the Lord—Jesus Christ’s return and the restoration of the Kingdom of God on the earth. We are to pray “Your kingdom come” (Matthew 6:10).

But the Day of the Lord itself will be a terrifying and devastating time for the majority of people on earth. The Bible says they won’t repent in spite of the Great Tribulation and then the wrath of God against sin displayed in the Day of the Lord.

But apparently in Amos’ day some thought that they were on God’s good side and would be protected and vindicated in the Day of the Lord. But Amos shows that they were hypocritical and not pleasing God (Amos 5:21-23). In verse 19 God shows what the Day of the Lord will really be like: “It will be as though a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him! Or as though he went into the house, leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him!”
