Unless the LORD Builds the House

Psalm 127:1

Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.

The main point of this psalm is that God must be intricately involved in all our endeavors in life—especially endeavors that involve communities of people. We must seek God’s guidance in order to truly have blessings. This is how God builds through human beings.

This applies directly to human families. Husbands and wives should seek to build their households according to the standards of God’s Word. When that is done, and a husband and wife diligently seek God, they position themselves for blessings and are allowing God to build their house. Lives and families must be built on Jesus Christ, the Rock (Matthew 7:24).

This also applies to businesses, communities and nations. To the extent that they follow and rely on God, they position themselves to be blessed. To the extent that they ignore and reject God, they position themselves to fail.

The most direct application of this verse is what God is doing on a grand scale—His plan of salvation for all of mankind. God is building a Church on the Rock of Jesus Christ (Matthew 16:18). Those who are a part of that Church are those who will be in the ultimate household of God—God’s eternal family (Hebrews 2:10).
