The World Mourns at His Coming
Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
This scripture teaches us much about the return of Jesus Christ. We learn that Jesus’ return will be visible to all. How will Jesus Christ be seen by all? Remember, Christ is returning in His glorified spirit form. A description of the returning Christ is found in Revelation 19:12. He will shine as light and will not appear as an average human being. He will return in great power and majesty. Perhaps, as He descends, He will encircle the earth to make His presence known to all.
We also read that the “tribes of the earth will mourn” His presence. Christ will not be welcomed with a jubilant reception befitting the King that He is. The people will despise Him, just as people did at His first coming. Revelation 19 describes the nations of the earth joining forces to launch a counterattack on the returning Christ: “And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army” (verse 19). Christ will easily defeat these armies (verses 20-21).
