The Unity of the Spirit

Ephesians 4:2-3

With all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Listen to the "Verse by Verse" episode covering this scripture.

Humility, patience and following the Golden Rule ( Matthew 7:12 ) all help us build stronger relationships with others. In the Church, God’s Spirit provides extra glue that can help bind us together as a peaceful and harmonious family.

However, if that sounds easy, consider the original Greek. The word Paul used for “endeavoring” implies “intensely labor” (Adam Clarke) or “zealously giving diligence” (Jamieson, Fausset and Brown). Godly unity is hard work, but it is work with a great and eternal reward.
