The Paths of Light and Darkness

Proverbs 4:18-19

But the path of the just is like the shining sun, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is like darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble.

Many places in the Bible contrast the two paths—the two ways of life (John 1:4-9; 3:19-21; Romans 13:12-13; Ephesians 5:8-14; etc.). God is light, and His way is clear and safe, like walking in the daylight. But evil men love darkness as a cloak for their actions. In the dark, you cannot clearly see the dangers. There are many obstacles that we can stub our toes on or trip over in the dark; but worse, there are steep cliffs we can blunder over without warning.

As the light allows us to not only see clearly, but to enjoy beauty, God’s way leads us toward the perfect day, the beautiful perfection of the Kingdom of God.
