The Passing Pleasures of Sin
Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin.
The Bible doesn’t hide the fact that breaking God’s law can seem fun. Satan has had thousands of years to perfect his illusion that sin is the enjoyable and pleasurable choice. But Moses came to see that these pleasures were only passing—they are fleeting highs followed by deep and real lows.
Read through Psalm 51 and notice the pain and agony that David’s sin with Bathsheba caused in his life. What was pleasurable temporarily caused great anguish and suffering later. Had David obeyed the Seventh Commandment and not committed adultery with Bathsheba, he could have avoided all of that suffering.
Following God’s laws is the only way to true fulfillment and eternal happiness, even if Satan has rigged the system in this world to punish the righteous with affliction. Thankfully, that affliction is also passing and soon the whole world will know and obey the law of God (Habakkuk 2:14).
