The Heavens Declare the Glory of God

Psalm 19:1-2

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge.

The nations around Israel worshipped the heavenly bodies as gods, but David knew that the vast heavens proclaimed the wonders of our Creator God. His many nights spent in the open protecting his sheep and later running from Saul gave David much time to meditate on the awesome universe. He recognized how small we are in comparison to the firmament of space.

In verses 3 through 6, David continues the theme, focusing in on the most impressive of the heavenly bodies, the sun.
