The Gift of God Is Eternal Life

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Listen to the "Verse by Verse" episode covering this scripture.

The apostle Paul sums up so much in this short verse. Humans, by choosing the way of sin, have earned the penalty of eternal death, the second death. He does not say the wages are eternal life in hell. (For more on this, see the article “What Is Hell?”)

Eternal life is not something that we could ever earn. It is only available as an unmerited gift from God, made possible by Jesus Christ’s sacrifice for our sins.
