Spirit of a Man

Proverbs 20:27

The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all the inner depths of his heart.

This verse references one of the most interesting subjects found in the Bible—the spirit in man. This verse clearly shows that man has an inner spirit that allows God to know the “inner depths of his heart.”

This “spirit of a man” is a spiritual element given to all human beings that sets us apart from the animal kingdom. Only human beings, who were created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26), have been given this “spirit.”

Paul writes that the spirit of man is how a “man knows the things of a man” (1 Corinthians 2:11). In other words, the amazing and unique abilities that humans possess—the ability to design, build, write, think at high levels and ponder their destiny and purpose—are all abilities made possible by “the spirit of a man.”

The “spirit of a man” can only reach its ultimate potential if it is combined with the Holy Spirit of God—which reveals to it “the things of God” (1 Corinthians 2:11).
