The Voice of the Lord
The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders; the LORD is over many waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
The Canaanites and too many Israelites worshipped Baal, the god of the storm. But David clearly shows that the true God has control over all the forces of nature. Thunder should remind us of God’s power and majesty, and David repeats the words “the voice of the LORD” seven times in quick succession in this psalm, “like rapidly succeeding peals of thunder” (The Nelson Study Bible, note on Psalm 29:3).
Other passages in the Bible focus on the power of God’s voice, such as Exodus 20:18-19; Job 37:4-5; Revelation 1:10, 15. For more about the power of God to help us in all of our troubles, see our section on “Who Is God?”
