Pride Goes Before Destruction

Proverbs 16:18

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

The proud are an abomination to God (Proverbs 16:5) because of the destructive nature of pride. It destroys right relationships with God and with others, since pride places self above others, competition above cooperation, and getting above giving. Pride is a warped perspective that exalts a weak and ephemeral human being above the all-powerful, eternal Creator God!

This short-sighted view overlooks the dangers of following Lucifer’s example (Isaiah 14:12-15). Just as Lucifer’s self-exaltation led to his fall, human pride inevitably leads to a fall. It’s a matter of cause and effect.
