Out of the Mouths of Babes

Psalm 8:2

Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, because of Your enemies, that You may silence the enemy and the avenger.

Our great Creator is full of surprises. After stretching our minds past the farthest reaches of the universe to see God’s glory above it all (verse 1), He brings us back to earth to notice the smallest and weakest among us—newborn babies and nursing infants. And the strongest Being in the universe gives these weak ones the honor of playing a part in silencing God’s enemies.

Jesus Christ pointed out a fulfillment of this during His triumphal entry into Jerusalem before His crucifixion. The people were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” which was making the chief priests and scribes very angry (Matthew 21:15). They indignantly asked Him, “‘Do You hear what these are saying?’ And Jesus said to them, ‘Yes. Have you never read, “Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have perfected praise”?’” (verse 16).

God uses babies and children to teach us many things. See the Discern magazine article “Like Little Children: Lessons for Life.”
