One Language

Genesis 11:1

Now the whole earth had one language and one speech.

We have seen that after the Flood, God’s intention was for the descendants of Noah to multiply and spread out throughout the earth (Genesis 9:1; 10:31-32).

God created the earth with a circumference of 24,901 miles and intended its diverse regions, continents and climates to be inhabited by human life. His intention was never for mankind to crowd together in one geographical area.

The Bible reveals that God “made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings” (Acts 17:26).

But God’s will for men to “dwell on all the face of the earth” was being compromised by the descendants of Noah crowding together in the land of Shinar (Genesis 11:2)—a location in ancient Mesopotamia (modern Iraq). Many of them began developing a unified human civilization in fear of God and another flood.

Tomorrow we will see why this was so dangerous and contradictory to the will of God.
