The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.
Throughout much of history, the key defensive strategy was to build a strong fortification or castle. The people with the strongest towers were the most protected. But Solomon recognized that God’s protection provides far greater safety. Calling on God’s name in prayer is more effective than massive rock walls.
This theme is reflected in the Psalms as well. For example, Solomon’s father David wrote, “For You have been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy” (Psalm 61:3).
