Forsake Foolishness and Live
“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” As for him who lacks understanding, she says to him, “Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Forsake foolishness and live, and go in the way of understanding.”
Wisdom, personified as a woman here, invites everyone to learn from the wisdom of God that is the real key to success in this life and the next. Humans naturally lack this wisdom, and too often lack the wisdom even to take advantage of this wonderful invitation.
“He that is simple is invited, that he may be made wise, and he that wants a heart (so the word is) let him come hither and he shall have one. Her preparations are for the cure of the mind” (Matthew Henry’s Commentary on Proverbs 9).
