Famine of the Word
“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord GOD, “That I will send a famine on the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.”
God desires the eternal best for everyone. He knows how destructive sin is and even sends punishments such as famine to try to lead us to repentance. God explained: “Also I gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities. And lack of bread in all your places; yet you have not returned to Me” (Amos 4:6).
It seems this lack of repentance eventually leads to a time when God’s Word will be rare. The Church has the commission of spreading God’s truth, but eventually it seems that witness will be restricted. Finally some people will realize what they are missing and will “run to and fro, seeking the word of the LORD, but shall not find it” (Amos 8:12).
But eventually, at the return of Jesus Christ, those who are searching will find the knowledge of God, and “the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea” (Isaiah 11:9).
