Depart From Evil

Psalm 34:14

Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

In this section of Psalm 34, King David seeks to teach “the fear of the LORD” (verse 11).

God defines what is good and evil through His laws, so to “depart from evil and do good” requires that we study His commandments and apply them. We must not follow the example of Adam and Eve who chose to try to decide what was good and evil for themselves (Genesis 3:4-6).

The Bible tells us that humans do not know the way of peace (Romans 3:17), but those who obey God’s laws and follow His ways can “seek peace and pursue it.”

For more about God’s laws, see our section on the “10 Commandments.”
