Children Are a Heritage

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb is His reward.

The Bible teaches that having children is a blessing. This blessing is most apparent when children are born into solid and stable families. These families are equipped to love and meet those children’s needs. The basis of a stable family is a healthy marriage between a husband and wife.

Unfortunately, we are living at a time when many choose not to have children. A recent Time magazine cover story explored “The Childfree Life: When Having It All Means Not Having Children.” The article pointed out the dramatic decrease in the birthrate in the industrialized Western nations. The current birthrate in the United States is lower than it has ever been in history. Many Americans, especially those with higher educations and incomes, are choosing not to have children. The article points out that many believe children will compromise their goals and the quality of life they enjoy without children.

Having children is a very personal matter, but it is important to remember the teaching of the Bible that children are “a heritage” from God.
