Before Honor Is Humility

Proverbs 18:12

Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, and before honor is humility.

The Proverbs are full of practical wisdom showing cause-and-effect relationships. Haughtiness—pride—may be a common mind-set of those who take charge and seem successful for a time; but in the end, haughtiness leads to destruction. However, humility—recognizing our own weaknesses and the greatness of God—will eventually lead to honor.

As the apostle Peter wrote, “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:6-7).
