Be Ready for Christ’s Return
“Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
Listen to the "Verse by Verse" episode covering this scripture.
God’s people throughout the ages have always longed for Jesus Christ’s second coming and the establishment of the Kingdom of God on the earth. The disciples asked Jesus, “When will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” (Matthew 24:3).
Jesus answered with many details of signs that would point to His imminent return, but He also warned His followers not to be deceived by false prophets (verses 4-5, 23-27). He explained, “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only” (verse 36).
Instead of focusing on trying to figure out the day and the hour of Christ’s return, Jesus tells us to instead focus on being ready. We must be like the “faithful and wise servant” whom Christ “will find so doing” (verses 45-46).
That means living the Christian life, doing the work of God and not letting down like the “evil servant” who “says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards” (verses 48-49).
