What does it mean to fast?
When the Bible refers to fasting, it refers to abstaining from food and drink for a specific period of time (the Day of Atonement establishes the precedent for a 24-hour period). Fasting is designed to humble us and help us draw closer to God. It is not a form of penance or a way to attain favor with God through self-imposed suffering.
The Bible talks about the spiritual tool of fasting, which can be used properly or improperly. What is fasting, and how does God want us to fast? What are the spiritual benefits of fasting?
