Getting to Know the God Family

Download

In the pages of Scripture, we discover that God is a family composed of God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son (also called “the Word”). How well do you know this God family?

John 1:1-5, 9-14, 16-18 (ESV)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it . . .

The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth . . . For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus

Starter Questions

  1. Before creating man, God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness” (Genesis 1:26, emphasis added). What does this important verse tell us about how the God family operates? What does it tell us about our potential future in the God family?

  2. Matthew 11:27 tells us that only Jesus can reveal the Father to us, and John 6:44 tells us that only the Father can draw us to the Son. Why do you think both the Father and the Son are so involved in this process of coming to know the God family?

  3. Why do you think God calls Himself “the Father” (1 Corinthians 8:6)? How does your view of fatherhood impact how you view God? How does your understanding of God impact how you view fatherhood?

  4. As our older Brother (Hebrews 2:11), Jesus provided a template for our own relationship with God the Father. What aspect of Christ’s relationship with the Father is most appealing to you? What can you do to incorporate that aspect into your own relationship with God?

  5. There is no limit to the power and might of God (Jeremiah 32:27)—and yet it’s easy for us as humans to assign a limit in our minds. Is there anything you don’t believe God can accomplish in your life? Why or why not?

  6. As Christians, we aren’t called just to know the God family, but to become part of it (1 John 3:1-9). What aspect of God’s nature are you most looking forward to sharing? Why?
