Christ’s Sacrifice Makes It Possible for Us to Be Holy

Colossians 1:21-22

And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight.

Listen to the "Verse by Verse" episode covering this scripture.

All mankind, under the influence and sway of Satan, has chosen the way of sin, which cuts us off from the holy God. Our minds, because of this influence of Satan, are not subject to God’s laws, making us enemies of God (Romans 8:7).

But the Son of God came in human flesh to be able to pay the death penalty for our sins in our place. Jesus Christ’s sacrifice made it possible for those whom God calls to have access to His Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit working with us neutralizes this hostility toward God that Satan injects into humanity through his influence. This allows us to repent and be forgiven. In God’s sight, the forgiven sinner is holy, blameless and above reproach—all because of Christ’s love and sacrifice.

God calls on us to be holy—to be like Him. See more about this in our article “Be Holy, for I Am Holy.”
